Sweet Delight of Sata Andagi: Okinawa’s Smiling Treat

Sata Andagi, Okinawa's beloved deep-fried confection, offers a delightful twist on the traditional doughnut hole. Originating from China, this golden-brown pastry has become a cherished symbol of Okinawan culture. Its name, often translated as "laughing balls" or "smiling balls," comes from its unique appearance—a charming cracked surface resembling a cheerful smile when fried.

What Makes Sata Andagi Special?

This sweet treat holds a special place in Okinawan celebrations, often served at weddings, betrothals, and other festive occasions. Its golden exterior and rich flavor symbolize joy and good fortune, making it an irresistible addition to any gathering.

How to Make Sata Andagi at Home

< Ingredients (makes 17 pieces) >

  • 1 bag of Sata Andagi Mix
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Oil for frying (as needed)

< Equipment >
Mixing bowl, whisk, spatula, measuring spoon, frying pan, chopsticks, skewer

< Instructions >

  1. Prepare the Eggs:
Beat 3 large eggs in a mixing bowl using a whisk.
  2. Combine Ingredients:
Add the Sata Andagi Mix to the bowl and gently mix with a spatula until the powder is no longer visible. Add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil and lightly combine.
  3. Shape the Dough:
Grease your hands with a bit of vegetable oil and shape the dough into ping-pong-sized balls (approximately 40g each).
  4. Fry to Perfection:
Heat frying oil to 140–150°C (284–302°F). Gently drop the dough balls into the oil. Once they rise to the surface, use chopsticks to roll them around and fry for 8 minutes or until golden brown.
    Check for Doneness:
Insert a skewer into the center of the fried ball. If it comes out clean, your Sata Andagi is ready to enjoy!
